Section 144 imposed in Uppinangady

Uppinangady: Over ten people have been assaulted after police lathicharged people who had gathered in front of the local police station protesting the arrest of three leaders of the Popular  Front of India and SDPI  in connection with an incident of attack near the Subrahmanya Cross in Halegate recently.

Protestors have alleged that the three men in question have been called for interrogation but were later detained. Section 144 has been imposed in the area.

Police had taken into custody Zakaria Kodippady, President of Nekkilady Committee of SDPI, Mustafa Latif, Uppinangady Block unit SDPI President and Abdul Hameed, President of Uppinangady Zonal Committee of the PFI. Soon after several PFI and SDPI activists gathered in front of the station and demanded the release of those arrested. Later DySP Dr Gana Kumar spoke to the protestors and assured them to release those arrested following which protestors dispersed.

However, when only one person was released, people gathered again and staged a protest demanding the release of the other two followings which police resorted to lathicharge in which over 10 were injured.
