Director Reacts to The Royals Backlash

Netflix Indias latest romantic drama The Royals launched last week with all the right ingredients — lavish sets, elegant costumes, and a fresh pairing in Ishaan Khatter and Bhumi Pednekar. But while the visuals impressed, the storyline didnt quite rule viewers hearts.

Critics and audiences alike have panned the series for its weak plot and lack of chemistry between the lead pair. Now, director Priyanka Ghose has responded to the backlash, acknowledging the divided reactions and promising to do better in future projects.

Speaking to India Today, Ghose said, With Bhumis casting by Netflix, I was actually very open to the idea of trying this new pairing. They are both such powerful actors, and I was excited to see them embody glamorous roles, which goes against both of their works so far.

She defended the choice by stating that their chemistry didnt feel odd during filming. If it didnt work for some people, I will try better next time, she added. But there are also people who enjoyed the show and their chemistry. Its crazy how polarised the feedback has been.

Among the other points of contention were Ishaan Khatters multiple shirtless scenes. Ghose clarified that those were part of the original script and not added for unnecessary flair. Ishaan is an intelligent actor. He wouldnt have taken his shirt off just for the sake of it. In fact, he often questioned if we were going overboard.

Interestingly, she revealed that the team had prepared a stylish wardrobe for Ishaans character, but ended up using fewer looks than planned. We wouldve loved to use more clothes on him, she said with a laugh.

Addressing disappointment around Zeenat Amans short screen time, Ghose said her appearance was always intended as a cameo. It was never meant to be a full arc. When a legendary superstar like Zeenat maam appears on screen, fans naturally want more — and thats a good thing.

Set in the fictional town of Morpur, The Royals follows Fizzy Ishaan Khatter, a reluctant prince who inherits a crumbling palace and empty coffers after his fathers death. To save the legacy, the royal family partners with a modern startup, led by Sophia Bhumi Pednekar, who wants to turn the palace into a luxury bed and breakfast.

Despite the criticism, the series has sparked conversation — and that, if nothing else, keeps the show in the spotlight.
