Bangladesh growing concerns about violence against minority communities

Recent tensions in Bangladesh have included calls by Islamist groups like Hefazat-e-Islam to ban ISKCON (International Society for Krishna Consciousness), accusing it of anti-Hindu and anti-state activities. These demands followed clashes and heightened communal tensions, particularly in Chattogram. Hefazat alleges ISKCON has engaged in actions against Muslims and security forces, an accusation denied by ISKCON.

However, on November 28, 2024, the Bangladesh High Court rejected a petition to ban ISKCON. The government, led by Muhammad Yunus, withdrew its case against the organization amid widespread protests and calls for peace and coexistence. The court emphasized the need for maintaining harmony among communities.

This development follows broader unrest, including the arrest of an ISKCON leader on sedition charges, which sparked protests among the Hindu minority. ISKCON has called for peaceful engagement and denied involvement in violence.

Recent reports from Bangladesh highlight growing concerns about violence against minority communities, particularly Hindus and Christians, amidst the country’s political unrest following the removal of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina's government in August 2024. Attacks on minorities have reportedly escalated, with claims of over 2,000 incidents targeting Hindus since August, including the destruction of temples and homes. The Hindu Buddhist Christian Unity Council has been vocal about these issues, calling for justice and government protection.

In addition, large-scale protests have been organized by the Hindu community, with tens of thousands rallying in cities like Chattogram to demand safety and the withdrawal of cases against Hindu leaders.
