Temples Burned, Homes Attacked: Hindus Become Vulnerable Targets in Bangladesh

What began as a protest against a quota system for government jobs in Bangladesh has escalated into widespread looting and rioting. The minority community, mainly Hindus, has come under severe attack. With Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina fleeing to India and an interim government yet to be established, social media is flooded with videos of temples being set on fire and the homes and businesses of Hindus being attacked.
In Bangladesh's Khulna division, an ISKCON temple in Meherpur and a Kali temple were vandalized and set on fire. ISKCON spokesperson Yudhistir Govinda Das tweeted that their rented ISKCON center in Meherpur, including deities of Lord Jagannath, Baladev, and Subhadra Devi, was burned. Three devotees living at the center managed to escape and survive.
Hindu councillor Haradhan Roy of the Rangpur City Corporation was reportedly killed on Sunday, marking one of the deadliest days since the protests began. Another councillor, Kajal Roy, was also reportedly lynched. Over 100 people died on Sunday as protesters clashed with police and demanded the resignation of Sheikh Hasina.
The lynching of Haradhan Roy was highlighted by Sanjeev Sanyal, a member of the Economic Advisory Council to the Prime Minister. "As a Bengali Hindu and a descendant of refugees, I find this particularly chilling," he tweeted.
A video shared by a Hindu activist in Bangladesh shows a girl pleading for help in Pirojpur district. Another video captures a temple in Navgraha Bari, Chittagong, being burned by a mob.
The Bangladesh Hindu Buddhist Christian Unity Council reported 54 attacks on Hindu temples, houses, and establishments, including the Indira Gandhi Cultural Centre. These are the worst attacks on Hindus since 2021, following Prime Minister Narendra Modi's visit.
