Supreme Court Refuses Interim Bail for Arvind Kejriwal

The Supreme Court declined to grant interim bail to Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, who was arrested by the Enforcement Directorate on March 21 on money laundering charges related to the alleged liquor policy scam.

During the hearing, the court acknowledged the upcoming Lok Sabha elections and Mr. Kejriwal's role as an elected Chief Minister. However, it expressed concerns over his potential involvement in official duties if granted bail, particularly in light of the ongoing governance issues between Delhi's AAP government and the Lieutenant Governor.

Senior advocate Abhishek Manu Singhvi, representing Mr. Kejriwal, assured the court that his client would refrain from signing any files if released on bail. However, the court reiterated its stance against interference in the functioning of the government and emphasized the need to avoid setting a precedent for politicians accused of crimes.

The Enforcement Directorate opposed bail, arguing that releasing Mr. Kejriwal would undermine the integrity of the legal process and send a wrong message to the public. The agency highlighted Mr. Kejriwal's repeated evasion of summons for investigation as well as the timing of his arrest just weeks before the Lok Sabha elections.

Despite arguments from both sides, the court remained firm in its decision, emphasizing the need to uphold the rule of law and maintain the integrity of the electoral process. The ruling has significant implications for Mr. Kejriwal's election campaign and the broader political landscape in Delhi.

The court's decision underscores the complexities surrounding Mr. Kejriwal's arrest and its impact on his political career. As the legal proceedings continue, the public awaits further developments in this high-profile case, which has sparked debates over governance, accountability, and the intersection of law and politics.
