Tihar Officials: Kejriwal Stopped Insulin Before Arrest

Reports from Tihar jail officials indicate that Arvind Kejriwal, the jailed Chief Minister of Delhi and national convenor of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), had ceased taking insulin shots months prior to his arrest in the Delhi excise policy case. The disclosure comes amidst claims of a conspiracy by AAP and a debate over Kejriwal's medical treatment while in custody.
According to a report submitted to Lieutenant Governor VK Saxena by Tihar jail authorities, Kejriwal had transitioned to basic anti-diabetes oral medication before his arrest. The report responds to allegations raised by AAP regarding the denial of insulin to Kejriwal while in jail.
The report asserts that Kejriwal's health was evaluated by a medicine specialist on April 10 and 15, who recommended oral-diabetic drugs for the incarcerated AAP leader. Tihar officials clarify that Kejriwal was never denied insulin during his treatment and that it is readily available for administration as needed.
However, the report highlights Kejriwal's decision, under the supervision of a Telangana-based private doctor for diabetes, to discontinue insulin intake several months ago. Kejriwal reportedly informed jail doctors during medical examinations that he had ceased insulin usage "a few months back," despite having taken it for several years.
Contrary to AAP's claims, the report cites medical records from RML Hospital indicating no prescription or necessity for insulin for Kejriwal. Additionally, the Tihar administration has sought dietary advice from AIIMS for Kejriwal, noting his consumption of high-sugar foods such as sweets, fried items, and fruits.
The AIIMS-recommended diet plan for Kejriwal strictly prohibits fried foods, high-sugar fruits, sweets, and other high-cholesterol items. Kejriwal's oil intake is capped at 20 ml per day as per the dietary guidelines.
AAP leader Atishi alleges a conspiracy to harm Kejriwal in jail, while the BJP accuses AAP of spreading falsehoods. AAP contends that Kejriwal, a severe Type-II Insulin dependent diabetic, needs insulin administration to prevent the risk of multi-organ failure.
Kejriwal's arrest on March 21 in connection with a money-laundering case related to the Delhi government's excise policy has sparked controversy over his medical treatment and conditions in jail. He has been detained in Tihar jail since April 1, with AAP persistently advocating for his health and rights during incarceration.
