The death of an Indian student in Kharkiv will be investigated by Russia

According to Russian Ambassador-designate Denis Alipov, Russia will examine the murder of a 21-year-old Indian medical student in Kharkiv, Ukraine. When Naveen Shekarappa Gyanagoudar, a fourth-year medical student at Kharkiv National Medical University, went out to collect food, he was killed during severe bombardment of the east Ukraine city.

Naveen had gone grocery shopping and was waiting in line outside a store when he was hit, according to his friends. According to eyewitnesses, the Russians blew up a nearby government facility.

Foreign Secretary Harsh Vardhan Shringla has stated that the circumstances surrounding his death remain unclear.

Mr Alipov was cited as stating at a press conference by news agency Press Trust of India, "I want to convey our sympathies to the family of Naveen Shekarappa Gyanagoudar and to the entire Indian country over the tragedy."

"Russia will do everything it can to protect the safety of Indian citizens in combat zones... and a thorough investigation of this regrettable situation," he added.

Since Russian military invaded Ukraine on February 24, amid months of tension over Ukraine's proximity to NATO, more than 300 civilians have been killed.

After three days of confrontations in Ukraine, a UN human rights monitoring team reported 376 civilian casualties, including 94 deaths. According to Reuters, a UN study indicated the violence had resulted in "grave humanitarian effects" and that the number of dead could be far higher.

The death toll increased as Russia switched tactics, launching an all-out onslaught with a significant number of troops, bombers, and a rocket barrage on Kyiv and Kharkiv, the Ukrainian capitals. Small units of soldiers were initially sent, backed up by tanks, armoured personnel vehicles, and attack helicopters.

India has asked Russian and Ukrainian envoys to provide "immediate safe passage" to Indian citizens stranded in Kharkiv and other war zones.
