A Delhi court overseeing the case of Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal's incarceration in Tihar jail has issued a directive ensuring that the food provided to him strictly adheres to the diet prescribed by his medical team. The court noted discrepancies between the home-cooked meals sent to Kejriwal and the diet plan recommended by his doctor, emphasizing the absence of items such as potatoes, taro, and mangoes, which were included in the meals.

Special Judge Kaveri Baweja remarked on the lack of clarification from jail authorities regarding the allowance of food items not in accordance with Kejriwal's medical prescription. Consequently, the court ruled that Kejriwal would continue to receive home-cooked food, provided it aligns with a diet plan formulated by an AIIMS medical board, comprising senior endocrinologists and diabetologists.

Pending the formulation of a diet plan by the medical board, Kejriwal's family has been instructed to strictly adhere to the diet chart prescribed by his doctor and the court's previous order dating back to April 1, when he was remanded to judicial custody. The court emphasized the responsibility of Tihar jail authorities to ensure that Kejriwal's food items strictly comply with the medically prescribed diet.

In response to Kejriwal's plea for daily consultation with his family doctor via video call, the court rejected the request. Furthermore, the court addressed Kejriwal's request for insulin administration, citing his hyperglycemic condition, where blood sugar levels are excessively high. The court mandated an evaluation by the AIIMS medical board to determine the necessity of insulin treatment, with any intervention subject to approval by jail authorities in consultation with the board.

The decision follows allegations from the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) claiming that Kejriwal is being denied insulin, prompting concerns about his health and well-being. Kejriwal's current detention in Tihar jail stems from his arrest in connection with the Delhi liquor policy case.

The court's directive underscores the importance of medical supervision and adherence to prescribed treatments, ensuring the health and safety of individuals in custody, irrespective of their public stature.
