Assam Police Apprehend ISIS India's Key Figures

The Assam Police announced the capture of two prominent leaders of ISIS in India, Haris Farooqi and Anurag Singh, who were reportedly plotting sabotage activities. The arrests occurred near the international border after the suspects crossed over from Bangladesh.
A statement from the Assam Police revealed that they acted upon information received from sister agencies regarding the presence of the two ISIS leaders in a neighboring country. The Strategic Task Force (STF) team, led by Sri Parthasarathi Mahanta, IPS, IGP (STF), and Sri Kalyan Kumar Pathak, APS, Addl SP, STF, was tasked with apprehending the accused, who are also wanted by the National Investigation Agency (NIA).
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma commended the state police for their swift action, affirming the government's commitment to combat fundamentalism and terrorism under Prime Minister Narendra Modi's leadership.
Identified as Haris Farooqi and Anurag Singh alias Rehan, the arrested individuals hold significant roles within ISIS in India. Farooqi, hailing from Dehradun, serves as the head of the ISIS cell in India, while Singh, a resident of Panipat, Haryana, recently converted to Islam, with his wife being a Bangladeshi national.
The police described both suspects as highly indoctrinated and motivated leaders, actively promoting ISIS's agenda in India through recruitment, terror funding, and plotting terror acts involving improvised explosive devices (IEDs) across the country. Multiple cases have been registered against Farooqi and Singh by the NIA in New Delhi and the Anti-Terrorist Squad (ATS) in Lucknow.
The STF has announced its intention to hand over the accused to the NIA for further legal proceedings, highlighting the severity of the charges against them and the collaborative efforts of law enforcement agencies to combat terrorism in the region.
The apprehension of Farooqi and Singh marks a significant breakthrough in counter-terrorism efforts, underscoring the vigilance and proactive measures adopted by security forces to safeguard national security and prevent extremist activities within the country.
